Freedom on the Hill - Giclee Prints

from $88.00

Freedom on the Hill was born in early spring of 2018, during the ALS DC Conference—days filled with hard conversations, urgent advocacy, and the steady hope that brings people back to the Hill again and again. From Freedom Park, Tom Ward set up his easel facing the U.S. Capitol, letting the long avenue and tree line guide the eye toward that bright dome—an emblem of our institutions, yes, but also of endurance.

Painted largely on site, this piece carries the immediacy of plein air work: softened sky, brisk street tones, and confident, expressive strokes that let the scene breathe. The warmth of the underpainting peeks through the cooler grays and greens, giving the boulevard a pulse—like a city holding its breath between traffic lights and testimony.

During that week, the ALS Association asked to interview Tom about his motivation. He quietly declined. Instead, we invited them to witness the work—photograph it, document it—but to let him paint in peace, alongside his devoted service dog, Maddie. The final touches were completed at home, but the heart of the painting remains right there: a clear view of the Capitol, created amid advocacy and filled with resolve.

Each Giclee print is hand-signed and dated by Tom Ward — a genuine mark of the artist at this moment in his life. As ALS gradually limits his physical strength, these signatures carry meaning beyond authentication. They reflect persistence and devotion to craft.
