There is nothing quiet about Sunflowers. Yellow moves through the painting in great, unruly gestures, pushing against deep blues, flashes of red, and earthy orange. The flowers seem to emerge, disappear, and then reappear within the layers. It is less a traditional painting of sunflowers and more the feeling of standing among them.
Tom painted this years ago in the garage, surrounded by the motorcycles he loved riding. He could still work out there then, and he was having fun—something you can feel in every energetic mark. I rescued this painting because Tom was thrilled with it, and I loved it too. It now hangs unframed beside my treadmill, still every bit as wild and uncontained as the day he painted it.
